AUGUST IS THE MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY.

THE TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Dear parishioners,

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: THIS SUNDAY.

Mary is the Blessed One, but what words can adequately praise her virtue, or the graces she received from our Saviour for the benefit of the whole human race? It would be impossible to do so even if one could speak in the tongues of humans and of angels, to use the words of St. Paul. Hence, in love and veneration of Mary, The Church has poured out hundreds of titles in her honour. Poetry and song, icons, paintings and carvings may only begin to express our joyful veneration. You, O Blessed Virgin Mary are Mother of God, Mother most pure, Mother most admirable, Virgin most powerful, Mirror of justice, Seat of wisdom, Cause of our joy, Mystical Rose, House of gold, Refuge of sinners, Morning Star, Queen of angels, Queen of the family, Queen conceived without original sin, Queen assumed into heaven. It seems to me that part of the eternal happiness in store for us will be really to know and proclaim the graces of Mary in a fitting way. For these no eye has seen nor ear heard, using the words of The Beloved Disciple, St John: The world cannot contain them. And indeed, although the church has only one official litany of Mary, there are many, many unofficial ones which can be said in private devotion, such as the Litany of the Immaculate Heart ( see below), the Litany of the Holy Name of Mary, the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Litany of Our Lady of Hope, The Litany of Our Lady of Good Help, The Litany of Our Lady of Victory. And then there are the litanies of particular shrines: the Litany of Our Lady of Fatima , The Litany of Our Lady of Walsingham, The Litany of Our Lady of Guadaloupe, The Litany of Our Lady of Vailankanni. That’s a litany of litanies! Try it sometime, just sit down, and while being conscious of your breath in and out, pray your way through one of the Litanies of Mary, and experience the graces she shares with those who befriend her. These great litanies elevate the mind from life’s sorrows and worries and give us, through symbolic and poetic words, a little key to the perception of Heavenly things. Today we join the angels and in joy proclaim that Mary, assumed into heaven, is full of grace, and ask her to pray for us sinners on this troubled earth.

Memorial Requiem for Joan Troy (16th March 1924 – 13th August 2020) A Requiem Mass is to be held for Joan Margaret Troy (née Welch) on 23rd August 2022 at 12.00 noon. She died peacefully of natural causes on 13th August 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic at Eastham Care Home in Chelmsford, Essex at the age of 96. Joan and her deceased husband John William Troy were stalwarts of the Saint Thomas More’s Parish and were ever present for Sunday Mass and Holy Days. John was a long serving member of the Knights of Saint Columba, and served a term as Grand Knight. They were both extremely active in fund raising to enhance the parish and its facilities. Joan will be well- remembered by the older parishioners for her service on the bar in the newly- built church hall most Friday nights with her dear friend Freda Ross. All are welcome to join the family at this mass. Joan Troy R.I.P.

.

Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, Spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, Graciously hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us.

V. Immaculate Mary, meek and humble of heart, R. Make our hearts like unto the Heart of Jesus.

Let Us Pray: O most merciful God, Who, for the salvation of sinners and the refuge of the miserable, was pleased that the Most Pure Heart of Mary should be most like in charity and pity to the Divine Heart of your son, Jesus Christ, grant that we, who commemorate this sweet and loving Heart, by the merits and intercession of the same Blessed Virgin, may merit to be found like the Heart of Jesus, through the same Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.

This litany was composed by John Henry (Cardinal) Newman shortly after he converted to Catholicism in 1845.

With my blessings,

Fr Jonathon.
