Saturday 3rd July– Saturday 10th July 2021

July is the month of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The fourteenth week of ordinary time

Dear parishioners,

Devotion to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ

July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the devotion which naturally flows through and from the feasts of Corpus Christi and the Sacred Heart which precede it in June, but all have their source in the Last Supper of Maundy Thursday and the death of Jesus on Good Friday.

The blood which poured from the Body of Christ on the cross, as witnessed by St John, was the ultimate expression of God’s love for us: the outward visible expression of the interior Heart of Jesus. Through the outpouring of the Most Precious Blood the sacraments were born, for they too are outward visible forms of God’s grace within them, the grace which is the love, forgiveness and healing given to us from the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. At every mass, and at every benediction of the Blessed Sacrament we are making our devotions to the Most Precious Blood. For at the Last Supper, the Lord took the cup and said ‘this is the chalice of my blood which will be poured out for you and for the many for the forgiveness of sins, do this in memory of me’. This promise of the Lord at the Last Supper was fulfilled on Calvary and is made present at the Sacrifice of the Mass. Our Lord’s Most Precious Blood which poured from Him on Calvary continues thus to flow as the channel of Divine love and mercy through the mass to us and onwards through our good works to the people we serve in our lives.

In the traditional calendar, The Feast of the Most Precious Blood is on July 1st. In the new calendar it has no specific feast day but has a ‘votive mass’ which means it can be said on any appropriate day.As a parish, we have been keeping this devotion in July, and this year the Mass of the Precious Blood will be said this coming Friday evening at 7.00 p.m.

JULY PRAYER: ‘Viva, viva, Gestu’ trans. Edward Caswell.

Glory be to Jesus who in bitter pains, poured for me the lifeblood from his sacred veins.

Grace and life eternal in that blood I find: blest be his compassion, infinitely kind.

Blest, through endless ages, be the precious stream - which from endless torment did the world redeem.

There the fainting spirit drinks of life her fill; there, as in a fountain, laves herself at will.

Abel’s blood for vengeance pleaded to the skies, but the blood of Jesus for our pardon cries.

Oft as it is sprinkled on our guilty hearts, Satan in confusion terror-struck departs.

Oft as earth exulting wafts its praise on high, angel hosts rejoicing, make their glad reply.

Lift, then, all your voices, swell the mighty flood; louder still and louder, PRAISE THE PRECIOUS BLOOD!

In unity,

Fr Jonathon
