AUGUST IS THE MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY
Twentieth Week of ordinary time
ST BARTHOLOMEW’S DAY Saturday 24th August 2024. Missa Cantata (Sung Latin Mass with Mass IV, the special mass setting for feasts of the apostles) at 10.00 a.m.
Saint Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles.
Bartholomew is a family name meaning “son of [Hebrew: bar] Tolmai, or Talmai,” so he may have had another personal name, believed to be Nathaniel. He is always associated with St. Philip the Apostle in the Gospel lists because he has been identified with Nathanael, who, according to John 1:43–51, was called with Philip by Jesus. Upon seeing Nathanael, Jesus said, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” His full name would be Nathanael bar Tolmai.
Further details of St Bartholomew emerge from the Tradition when the 4th-century Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea in his Ecclesiastical History related that, when the 2nd-century teacher St. Pantaenus of Alexandria made a visit to India, he found a Hebrew copy of The Gospel According to St Matthew, which had been left behind there by St Bartholomew. St Bartholomew is remembered in the traditions of the churches in Mesopotamia, Parthia (in modern Iran), Lycaonia (in modern Turkey), and Armenia as having served as a missionary in those places. The Church believes that St Bartholomew, the Apostle was martyred by flaying and beheading at the command of the Armenian king Astyages, during his mission to Armenia. Many graphic images of this martyrdom exist in iconography, paintings and statues. His relics were taken to the Church of St. Bartholomew-in-the-Tiber in Rome. In England St Bartholomew is perhaps best known for the dedication of St Bartholomew’s hospital in London.
MESSAGE FROM BEXLEY SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN. Bexley SPUC would like to thank Fr Jonathon, Annette, Pauline and all the parishioners of St Thomas More for a wonderful coffee morning on Sunday. We made a magnificent £100.
